Obviously, great lawns come in many different dimensions. And if you want to feel better, or at least fraternal, about the care of your own, consider how the other half lives and maintains some of the country’s great turf resources.
You don’t think about it much, but some of the best are the country’s national military cemeteries. National treasures for being the final resting place of America’s war heroes, yes, but national treasures for the pride and respect with which they’re cared for, as well.
Certainly, Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. comes to mind. And Evergreen Cemetery and the adjacent National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is one of the nation’s most respected.
But one we saw and photographed a couple of years ago probably ranks highest among all for pure natural beauty and the quality of its grounds and turf. As witnessed with the accompanying photo, the San Francisco National Cemetery at the grounds of the Presidio, outside the Golden Gate Bridge, is breathtaking for its form and location. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this really is what that phrase is about.
The turf is native northern California ‘Poa’, which grows well in the cool ocean climate of San Francisco, and the mowing and trimming around the stones never ceases, five days a week, every week. Something is being mowed at SFNC every day.
Inspiring, indeed. And, it makes you appreciate mowing your own 10,000 square foot lawn once a week. It’s just too bad you can’t have the view.
