And a good seed bed is about an absence of rocks, being level, and having the fertility to ensure a quick and confident germination. Combing the soil by hand for rocks, alone, is for sure going to try your patience, because rocks never seem to give up.
And when you’re done with the rock issue there’s the matter of getting a smooth surface that not only serves as a nursery for seed, but a satisfactory lawn surface for decades to come, once it’s established. Certainly, the traditional method of hand-seeding followed by a straw mulch to insulate moisture and protect from wind is one way of doing it.
But the more efficient method is through hydro-seeding, a mixture of seed and a wet, ground-up mulch mixture that is applied by a sprayer (above photo).
